Orthodontics

Orthodontic treatments are dental procedures aimed at correcting misaligned teeth and jaw irregularities to improve both the functionality and aesthetics of the smile. These treatments involve the use of various appliances, such as braces or aligners, to gradually move the teeth into their desired positions.
Here’s a brief note on orthodontic treatments:
1. Purpose: Orthodontic treatments primarily aim to address the following dental issues:
  • Malocclusions: Orthodontics correct bite problems, including overbites, underbites, cross-bites, and open bites, which occur due to misalignments of the teeth and jaws.
  • Crowding or Spacing: Orthodontic treatments can align crowded teeth, which are teeth that are too close together, or create space between teeth that have gaps.
  • Dental Midline Misalignment: When the centre line of the upper and lower teeth doesn’t align properly, orthodontics can help correct the midline position.
2. Braces: Traditional braces consist of metal brackets, arch-wires, and ligatures. They are fixed to the teeth and gradually move them into their desired positions. Braces are adjusted periodically to apply controlled force and guide the teeth’s movement. There are also more aesthetic options available, such as ceramic braces or lingual braces that are attached to the back surface of the teeth.
3. Clear Aligners: Clear aligners, such as Invisalign, are a popular alternative to traditional braces. They are custom-made, removable trays made of transparent plastic. Clear aligners apply gentle force to shift the teeth gradually. The trays are changed every few weeks to accommodate tooth movement.
4. Retainers: After completing orthodontic treatment, retainers are often prescribed to maintain the teeth in their new positions. Retainers can be removable or fixed and are typically worn for a specified period, gradually reducing to nighttime-only use.
5. Orthodontic Treatment Process: The orthodontic treatment process generally involves the following steps:
  • Consultation and Evaluation: A dentist or orthodontist evaluates your dental condition, takes X-rays, impressions, and photographs of your teeth, and discusses treatment options.
  • Treatment Planning: Based on the evaluation, a customised treatment plan is created to address your specific orthodontic needs.
  • Appliance Placement: Braces or clear aligners are fitted and placed on the teeth.
  • Regular Adjustments: Throughout the treatment, periodic appointments are scheduled to adjust braces or provide new aligners.
  • Monitoring Progress: The progress of tooth movement is regularly monitored through check-ups to ensure the treatment is progressing as planned.
  • Retention Phase: Once the active orthodontic treatment is complete, a retention phase follows to maintain the achieved results using retainers.
Orthodontic treatments are typically tailored to each patient’s unique needs. They can provide significant benefits, including improved oral health, enhanced appearance, better chewing and speech function, and increased self-confidence.
It’s important to consult with a qualified dentist or orthodontist to discuss your orthodontic concerns and determine the most suitable treatment option for you. They will guide you through the treatment process, address any questions or concerns, and help you achieve a straighter, healthier smile.
